The Glenlivet由George Smith正式创建于1824年，是最早拥有合法执照的蒸馏厂之一。在此之前，George Smith酿造的威士忌虽不合法，但却得到了英国国王 King George IV 的赏识并从此名声大噪。1864年，George Smit与知名的威士忌酒商 Andrew P. Usher 建立了业务关系，而两人的合作也促使The Glenlivet成为了首批出口威士忌并取得巨大成功的蒸馏厂之一。1871年George Smith逝世后，The Glenlive则由其幼子John Gordon Smith接管。那时，River Livet（利威特河）周边涌现了一大批蒸馏厂，其中不乏有竞争者将其蒸馏厂的名字命名为“Glenlivet”来提升自己的知名度。为此，John Gordon Smith展开了长期的维权行动，最终于1884年通过诉讼为格兰威特蒸馏厂正名，使其成为唯一有权使用“The Glenlivet”来命名的苏格兰威士忌品牌。
1921年，John Gordon Smith的侄孙Captain Bill Smith Grant接管了The Glenlivet。在经济大萧条（The Great Depression）和美国禁酒令的双重挑战下，Captain Bill Smith Grant的不懈坚持让The Glenlivet得以在美国威士忌市场上拥有一席之地。直到20世纪中期，The Glenlivet出产的威士忌已经占据了美国苏格兰麦芽威士忌总销量的一半份额。如今，The Glenlivet已归法国著名的Pernod Ricard所有，并成为了美国最畅销的麦芽威士忌品牌，同时也是全球第二畅销的单一麦芽威士忌生产商。
从1979年开始，The Glenlivet的酿酒工作一直由艾伦·温彻斯特（Alan Winchester）担任。这位经验丰富的酿酒师还获得了2018年国际烈酒挑战赛（International Spirits Challenge）授予的终身成就奖。在Alan Winchester的指导下，酒庄首先将苏格兰大麦浸泡在水中数日，待大麦发芽后对其进行烘干。随后，烘干的麦芽会被磨成粉状，然后与源自乔西井（Josie’s Well）的天然泉水混合在麦芽浆桶中以制成麦芽汁。接着，这些麦芽汁会被转入采用花旗松（Oregon Pine）制成的桶中进行发酵，酿出酒精度为8-9%的酒醪。在蒸馏的过程中，酒醪会在初馏机（Wash Still）中蒸馏出酒精度达20-22%的低度酒，而这些低度酒又会在再馏机（Spirit Still）中继续蒸馏。蒸馏冷却后得到的液体会被分成头液、中心液和尾液，而只有中心液会被装入精选的欧洲橡木桶和美国橡木桶中陈酿。从创始之初到现在，格兰威特一直秉持着“慢工出细活”的理念，以专业的水准、精湛的工艺和严谨的态度来打造品质上乘的威士忌。
